  • The Colorful Colorless Butterfly

0 comments / Posted on by The Butterfly Grove

Did you know that even the most colorful butterfly actually has NO COLOR? Most objects that we see have color because it contains pigments that reflect the color. Butterfly wings are made of transparent chitin butterfly wing microscopic viewmolecules. The colors come about because it bends the light to reflect in different ways.  The spacing and stacking pattern of the chitin determines the color that is reflected. This is called STRUCTURAL COLOR (as opposed to pigmented color) It is much like colors you see on a soap bubble.  TColors of a bubblehe bubble is transparent, yet you can see colors on the bubble… only on a butterfly it’s on a much smaller scale.... and there are millions of them.

How can sunlight turn into so many different colors?  It’s the same concept as a rainbow.  Sunlight looks white, but is made up of seven colors.  When the light passes through water or a prism, the light bends.  Some colors bend faster than others so they bend at different angles, thereby causing the light to split into the seven colors, creating a rainbow.  With the butterfly, the light is bent in many different directions and angles that it cancels out some colors.  Light is basically made of energy that travels in interference of lightwaves. When the top of the wave meets the bottom of a wave of equal size, the cancel each other out. The chitin bends the light this way and that, and cancelling out some colors.  What is left is the color that you see.       Because the angle of that the light hits the wings changes when the butterfly is flying, the colors slightly shift while the butterfly is in flight. This is called iridescence. This color shift throws of predators thereby adding protection to the butterfly.
Some butterflies, such as the glass wing butterfly truly look transparent.  In the picture on the left, you can see it does look transparent.  The chitin is arranged in such a way that no cancellation of light is occurring.

  • Valentine's Day Tea Party

0 comments / Posted on by The Butterfly Grove

Make Valentine’s Day special by planning a whimsical tea party for with your little girl. What better gift can you give her than giving her your time and memories? Dust off that tea set in your cupboard and watch your little girl’s eye widen with excitement.   Here are some tips to get you started:

    • Devalentine ladybugscorations: Go reds and pinks. Scatter some pink and red cutout hearts. Help her cut hearts out by folding the paper in half and draw half a heart along the fold. Scatter some little red and pink ladybugs in the mix as well.

    • The tea: Bitter tea can ruin a good tea party. The trick to good tea not over steeping your tea. When you over steep the tea it releases the tannins, the bitter chemical, into your tea. If you want a good strong tea, double the amount recommended rather than increasing the recommended steeping time.

    • The cups: If you have a tea set, by all means, break out that tea set! Allowing your girl to use the forbidden china set will make tea party much more enticing. Bone china is much sturdier than you may think and will make it through the tea party without damage.

    • The sugar: Prior to the tea party, take the half cupvalentines sugar of sugar, add a teaspoon of water and couple drops of food coloring.   Mix and put in heart shape molds to dry.

    • Have fun with it: Involve your little girl right from the planning stage. She will appreciate it more if she can add her own special touches to the event.

Happy Valentine’s Day from The Butterfly Grove!

  • Monarch Mimic - The Copycat Viceroy Butterfly

0 comments / Posted on by The Butterfly Grove

The Viceroy Butterfly is almost indistinguishable from the Monarch Butterfly. It has all the elegance and beauty of the Monarch, except for two distinct differences. First, it has a strip on the bottom wings, which the Monarch butterfly lacks, and second… it tastes good. The Monarch Butterfly is dreadfully distasteful to potential predators due to its diet of milkweed (milk weed is very bitter). This diet serendipitously protects the Monarch Butterfly from being eaten. Though the Viceroy Butterfly does not taste bad, it receives protection just by looking at the Monarch. Predators that have learned to stay away from the Monarch, also stays away from the Viceroy.

In nature, this is a defense system known as mimicry.  Organisms mimic the look of other organisms and benefit by being a copycat.

Interestingly, in the Royal Court system, the Viceroy runs countries, cities and counties in the name of the Monarch.
