Butterfly Nursery Ideas

Ask any little girl if she likes butterflies and the answer is bound to be a resounding YES. It goes thereby, that if you are expecting a little baby girl and considering your options for themes, you just could not go wrong with butterfly decor.

The shop and stores are filled to the brim with all types of butterfly nursery decor. Chandeliers, Rugs, Wall Art, Lamps, Mobiles, Bedding…in just about every shade of pink, is yours for the picking. So how do you find your way through all these butterfly decorations?

Having too many choices can make decisions even more difficult. Should you opt for the Sugar Plum Bedding Collection or the Butterfly Garden Collection? What type of butterfly wall decor is best and which butterfly mobile would your little one enjoy?

Your best bet is to choose the crib bedding first. Are you looking for bright and vibrant colors or soft and soothing? This will answer most of the questions that follow. Most manufacturers will offer more than just the bedding in their collections.

Cocalo, for example, offers a complete range of butterfly decor; such as shelves, wall art, night lights and more. You could, of course, decide to buy the entire collection. My suggestion would be to choose a few key pieces that can be strewn around the nursery, to kind of tie the whole room together.

I love the Lambs & Ivy Raspberry Swirl Crib Bedding Collection. The deep and light pink with subtle use of dark and light green give the collection a uniquely lively effect. I would go with the bedding, mobile, rug and lamp. The blanket in the bedding would make a beautiful focal point as wall art, above the crib. The rug and lamp would space out the design to the rest of the room.

Are you a hands-on person and do not want to simply ‘buy’ everything off the shelf? You can make paper butterflies and create your own wall art. Fix them into shadow boxes. To make the art stand out stick a garden themed paper to the back of the shadow box.

Give your personal touch to the nursery’s butterfly decor by stencil-painting your own design onto furniture or walls, or both.

Did the baby shower get you a dress with butterflies on it? Simple embroidery of her name on it will give you another piece of art to decorate your walls with. Didn’t get one? Don’t worry; choose one of your favorites and iron on a butterfly applique and even initials of her name. The nursery gets personalized in an instant.

With the wide range of options in the market, finding your distinct flavor is easy. Mix and match designs, themes and ideas to create a butterfly decor nursery that is as exceptional as your baby.

Butterfly Weddings

Posted in Butterfly Weddings on December 18th, 2009 by Chris — Be the first to comment!

One of the most beautiful wedding themes you can use is the butterfly wedding. Even more impressive is the wedding where there’s a butterfly release.

A Butterfly Wedding Theme

The first consideration when you are thinking about having a butterfly wedding where you will be releasing hundreds or thousands of butterflies is to do a complete butterfly theme for the wedding. This is where people get into trouble. Overdoing the theme where everything is “butterfly” oriented becomes tacky very quickly. This is why, even though a butterfly theme can form the foundation of a truly wonderful wedding, it’s very important to keep the theme very low key.

When you are planning to release butterflies, that is often enough so that butterfly images aren’t really needed on things like napkins of table cloth. By simply complimenting the “thought” of butterflies with things like wedding colors that compliment the species of butterflies that you purchased, or flowers throughout, guests will quickly recognize the theme and will appreciate the taste and style with which it was accomplished.

Alwasy pick your flower arrangements to compliment the colors of the butterflies you’ve selected. It is easy to obtain pictures of the butterflies online, even from the breeder where you order the butterflies for release. Make sure the bridesmaid’s dresses are complimentary. The groom and groomsmen will almost always be complimentary, because most butterfly wings have black in them.

Also, have your wedding in a location that makes sense to release butterflies. Either a butterfly garden, or any outdoor wedding would make a beautiful ceremony that is centered upon the beautiful transformation and release to the freedom and independence represented by the butterfly. Also make sure that the photographers for your wedding are aware that you’re going to be doing a butterfly release. They will surely want to prepare their cameras for the unique photo opportunities such an event provides.

Releasing Butterflies at a Wedding

Releasing butterflies at a wedding is becoming an increasingly popular way to create a unique and memorable ceremony. It is extremely easy to purchase a variety of species of butterfly online, simply conduct a web search for “butterfly release.”

The butterflies require very little to stay alive, so they are shipped to you in special “cooler” boxes, which they can be released from directly, or transferred to a larger “release basket” where they can be released. Instead of the traditional rice or birdseed, releasing a large group of butterflies at once creates a beautiful scene that both adults and children will love.

When the butterflies arrive, they’ve been cooled so that they enter a partial hibernation mode, where they get sluggish. They should be kept in these coolers until the ceremony. About 90 minutes before they are going to be released, you should transfer them to a warmer location so that they can perk up and become more active, otherwise many of them may not immediately launch into flight.

Calculating Butterflies to Buy

If you have never purchased live creatures before, it can feel a little strange. However, it is very common. People around the world release live butterflies into the wild for a variety of reasons. The butterflies are not hurt when they are shipped, in particular because they are placed in a cooler container that reduces their energy levels. It is a perfectly safe transition from where they are breeded to where you will be releasing them.

Most experts suggest having one butterfly for every two guests for good effect. In other words if you have 200 guests at your wedding, it’s a good idea to purchase 100 butterflies. You can either have guests release the butterflies, or release them all at once from a basket. Make sure to indicate your intentions when you order the butterflies from the breeder, because the breeder may have their own advice about what works best.

Is it Too Expensive?

Compared to other wedding costs, purchasing live butterflies is very inexpensive. One dozen butterflies is typically $90. The typical butterfly is either Monarch or the Painted Lady. Releasing these butterflies is considered perfectly normal for the butterflies and for the environment, and it will create one of the most memorable wedding ceremonies your guests will ever attend.

Butterfly Themed Wedding Ideas

Posted in Butterfly Weddings on November 23rd, 2009 by Chris — Be the first to comment!

A butterfly wedding theme is simple to create. There are many ways to weave the romantic butterfly theme throughout your wedding. First, decide on the color scheme. Some prefer white butterflies to accentuate their main motif while others choose the color of the butterflies based on the wedding’s color scheme.

A butterfly wedding theme could created by decorating the wedding with nylon butterflies suspended in the air. Large hanging butterflies would be perfect for hanging from the ceilings.  The pews could be decorated with chiffon gathered together with a butterfly tieback.

Butterflies can be incorporated into wedding attire as well.  Create a beautiful butterfly veil by fastening a butterfly to the headpiece.  Attach mini butterflies to the bridesmaids gown.  Tuck 3” nylon butterflies into the bouquet or wrap the bouquet with a ribbon with a butterfly fastened to it.  Sew one onto the garter, add them to the flower girl’s basket, add a butterfly to the boutonniere.

Butterfly reception ideas are endless.  Use mini butterflies around the wedding cake.  Tuck 5” nylon butterflies into the floral centerpiece.  Tie the napkins with a ribbon with a butterfly attached for napkin rings.  Attach butterflies to the table place card holder.  If you are having an outdoor wedding, you can create a seating chart along a line with butterfly pins holding up the charts.  Attach mini butterflies with ribbons to your champagne glasses.

Nylon butterflies can be attached to just about any favor. Organza bags with nylon butterflies are quite charming.  Butterflies attached to bags, boxes, and even seeds would be unforgettable.

There are hundreds of ways to decorate with butterflies at your wedding.  Butterflies are a symbol for new beginning of life.  Why not start your important day with romantic butterflies?

Adding Wire to Your Nylon Butterfly

Posted in Butterfly Crafts on June 28th, 2009 by Chris — Be the first to comment!

Although our butterflies do not come with wire, it is often useful to be able to add wire to them for various projects.  There are 2 ways to add wire to our nylon butterflies.  Before you begin, you may want to remove the string.  In order to do so, gently pull the short end of the knot to widen the loop and then gently cut the clear thread.

Once the string is removed, you have 2 ways to add a wire.  We recommend a florist wire for this project.

The first way is to turn the butterfly over and gently slide a wire through the fabric as shown:

The second way is useful if you are not confident about sliding a wire, you can inconspicuously add a wire to the butterfly by wrapping the wire from the front to back  and the twist, as shown:

Now you are ready to get creative!  Go ahead and wrap them around trees, pews, bamboo sticks, or whatever your creativity inspires you to do!

Dragonfly weddings are elegant and we get a lot of requests for ideas.  We absolutely love these favor bags with the dry leaf and flower inlays.  We embellished the bag to suite a dragonfly wedding theme.  We simply used hot glue and affixed a Sierra Dragonfly with its elegant pearl body onto the bag.  These dragonflies have rhinestone gems on wire and nylon wings and are about 3″ in wingspan.
